CI: Aggregate flake-regressions statistics - #728
Conversation
Each flake_regressions matrix job now collects the eval.timings files written by flake-regressions' eval-flake.sh (elapsed, user and kernel time, and maximum RSS of each flake evaluation) into a JSON file and uploads it as an artifact. A new flake_regressions_stats job downloads these, sums them per Nix configuration (lazy-trees = true/false, eval-cores = 24), and writes a table to the job summary. The aggregate is also uploaded as an artifact for comparing runs. Flakes that failed to evaluate are skipped. Jobs that needed a retry are marked, since the retry re-evaluates everything against an empty store, which makes their timings incomparable. Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Review comments at @.github/workflows/build.yml:
- Line 285: Update the flake_regressions workflow so a failed retry still allows
statistics collection and aggregation: disable matrix fail-fast, run the
collector after the test step succeeds or fails unless canceled, and upload its
artifact when collection succeeds. Adjust the flake_regressions_stats condition
to run after matrix failures while excluding skipped or canceled runs.
Review comments at @maintainers/flake-regression-stats.py:
- Around line 37-38: Update the collection logic using flake_dir so a stale
“failed” marker does not exclude an evaluation that ultimately succeeded on
retry; determine success from the final evaluation result or clear the marker
after a successful retry before checking it.

The success job downloads all artifacts of the run and moves each one's *.xz into ./artifacts. The flake regression statistics artifacts contain no tarballs, so with nullglob mv got only a destination argument and failed. Skip such artifacts. Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The aggregate JSON file now contains, for each configuration, the totals and the full statistics of every job, so that slow flakes can be found from a single artifact. The summary additionally lists the 10 slowest flakes (by elapsed time) per configuration. Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Determinate Nix installer now sets eval-cores = 0, so the lazy-trees configurations were also evaluating in parallel. Set eval-cores = 1 in nix.conf; the eval-cores = 24 configuration overrides it via NIX_CONFIG. Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The cache directory is on a Namespace cache volume that persists across runs, so its size may affect evaluation performance. Assisted-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Motivation
We want to track the resource usage (elapsed/user/kernel time, memory) of flake-regressions runs over time, but the per-flake numbers are spread over 42 matrix jobs.
Implementation
Each
flake_regressionsjob collects theeval.timingsfiles into a JSON artifact. A newflake_regressions_statsjob aggregates them per Nix configuration usingmaintainers/flake-regression-stats.py, writes a table to the job summary, and uploads the aggregate as an artifact. The
flake_regressionsjobs now seteval-cores = 1, since the Determinate Nix installer enables parallel evaluation by default. Previously thelazy-treesconfigurations were silently evaluating in parallel, which made them incomparable with theeval-cores = 24configuration.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
