fix: use capture phase for keydown listener in useAccessibility - #273
When a portal dropdown closes on Escape, its bubble-phase teardown can remove the accessibility listener before focus returns to the trigger. Escape now runs in capture. Tab retains bubbling so an overlay input can handle it locally with stopPropagation().
Regression tests cover focus restoration before an earlier window bubble listener unmounts the hook, plus locally handled Tab. The Escape test fails when its listener is changed back to bubbling; the Tab test fails with the previous all-keys capture listener.
Validation: all 34 Jest tests and 1 snapshot pass; TypeScript and compile pass. Lint has zero errors and one existing unused-disable warning in docs/examples/simple.jsx. This follow-up did not rerun native-browser or screen-reader checks. The independent nested-menu Escape work in #275 remains outside this change.

Moving the entire handleKeyDown listener to capture also changes Tab handling. I reproduced this with a Dropdown overlay containing an input whose onKeyDown calls stopPropagation(): on the base commit, Tab leaves focus on the input; on this head, the window handler runs first, moves focus to the overlay, and calls preventDefault() before the input can handle it.
Could we limit the capture-phase change to Escape and preserve bubbling for Tab, with a regression test for an overlay that handles Tab locally? Also, the new Escape test passes on the base commit too, so it does not currently detect a regression in the listener phase.

I checked exact head b22af69306b82d60e64c6f513956564d019fe781 against base hook b4ea62f3293851934d64d9d92cbbd07d87a40dea.
The added Escape test passes with either implementation. To exercise the ordering described here, I registered a window bubble listener before mounting the hook, dispatched Escape from a focused button, and had that earlier listener synchronously unmount the hook. With your head, the close callback runs once and focus returns to the trigger. With only the hook restored to the base version, the callback never runs. The two existing hook tests still pass in that base-hook control. This gives a regression test that distinguishes capture from bubble, consistent with the coverage gap already noted above.
Reproducer:
import{act,renderHook}from'@testing-library/react';importuseAccessibilityfrom'../src/hooks/useAccessibility';it('restores focus before an earlier window bubble listener synchronously tears down the hook',()=>{consttrigger=document.createElement('button');constitem=document.createElement('button');document.body.append(trigger,item);item.focus();constonOpenChange=jest.fn();letteardown=()=>{};constportalListener=()=>teardown();window.addEventListener('keydown',portalListener);consthook=renderHook(()=>useAccessibility({open: true,triggerRef: {current: trigger}, onOpenChange }));teardown=hook.unmount;try{act(()=>{item.dispatchEvent(newKeyboardEvent('keydown',{key: 'Escape',keyCode: 27,bubbles: true,cancelable: true}));});expect(onOpenChange).toHaveBeenCalledTimes(1);expect(onOpenChange).toHaveBeenCalledWith(false);expect(document.activeElement).toBe(trigger);}finally{window.removeEventListener('keydown',portalListener);hook.unmount();trigger.remove();item.remove();}});
Local results: head focused run 3/3 passed; base-hook control 2 passed / this regression failed. This is a hook-level teardown simulation, not a claim that I reproduced the actual portal integration or tested a screen reader. I reused an existing dependency tree with Node 24.15.0; the broader run had six suites pass (10 tests) and basic.test.tsx fail to load because that tree lacks @rc-component/menu, so I am not claiming a full-suite pass. No duplicate patch opened.

Additional validation at the same exact head, now using its own installed dependency tree (React/ReactDOM 19.3.1, menu 1.6.0, trigger 3.10.1, portal 2.2.1):
The original six suites / 32 tests / one snapshot pass. Compile passes; lint exits successfully with zero errors and one existing example-file warning. This replaces the earlier missing-menu dependency limitation; dependencies were resolved from declared ranges, not an upstream frozen lockfile.
In actual Chrome with real click/key input: click the single-level trigger → Tab focuses Alpha → Escape closes and focuses the trigger at your head. In the same bundle/dependency comparison with only the hook restored to base b4ea62f3293851934d64d9d92cbbd07d87a40dea, Escape closes but focus ends on the web area/body. This reproduces #272 beyond the synchronous teardown simulation.
I also checked a focused submenu item (Tab → ArrowRight → Child → Escape). Both head and base-hook control close the parent Dropdown. I filed this separately as #274 because it is inherited, not a new regression from this patch.
This is bounded native-browser and local test evidence, not screen-reader/WCAG conformance or an approval/merge claim. AI-assisted validation. No duplicate source patch opened.
I implemented the separately reproduced nested-menu Escape follow-up in react-component/menu#899 and #275. The Menu patch consumes Escape only when it returns to a real parent item; the Dropdown guard lets that nested menu receive the event even with this PR's capture-phase listener. Neither patch copies your listener-phase change.
Actual Chrome with both patches plus your exact capture flags now unwinds Child → Submenu → trigger, and Leaf → Inner → Outer → trigger, one Escape per level. The parent Dropdown stays open until root Escape; the single-level trigger-focus fix still works. This is complementary work for #274, not a request to replace your fix. AI-assisted implementation/validation, locally executed; no new screen-reader conformance claim.
I verified the existing Tab feedback above with a differential test at exact head b22af69306b82d60e64c6f513956564d019fe781 (the maintainer comment is from Oct 22; this is new validation, not a new report).
An overlay input with a React onKeyDown that calls stopPropagation() retains focus and leaves Tab unprevented with base hook b4ea62f3293851934d64d9d92cbbd07d87a40dea. At the current head, the same test fails because focus moves to the overlay before the input's handler runs.
A temporary candidate splitting the listeners by key passes the regression while retaining Escape focus restoration:
consthandleCapture=(event: KeyboardEvent)=>{if(event.keyCode===ESC)handleKeyDown(event);};consthandleBubble=(event: KeyboardEvent)=>{if(event.keyCode!==ESC)handleKeyDown(event);};window.addEventListener('keydown',handleCapture,true);window.addEventListener('keydown',handleBubble);// Cleanup removes both listeners with their corresponding capture flags.
Local results with the same resolved dependency tree/Node 24.15.0: base Tab control passes; current-head Tab control fails; Escape-only candidate passes 8 suites / 34 tests / 1 snapshot, including the earlier teardown-order regression. Combining that split with #275's nested-menu guard passes 7 focused tests / 4 suites plus TypeScript and compile. These are temporary local candidates; I restored this checkout and did not push changes to your branch or open a duplicate PR. My #275 commit keeps bubbling and remains unchanged.
This adds jsdom differential evidence; no new native-browser or screen-reader claim. AI-assisted fixture/candidate construction; the reported checks were executed locally.
Native follow-up (2026-10-24)
This extends the earlier jsdom-only results above. With real Chrome clicks and Tab input, base advances from Search to the next button inside the panel; the current #273 head instead focuses the panel wrapper. Native Tab executes its default focus navigation, unlike synthetic jsdom dispatch, so the native control expects the next button rather than focus staying on the input. All variants use the same panel click-propagation setting to keep it open.
The temporary Escape-only candidate combined with Menu#899 and #275 preserves that native Tab order. Escape from the panel returns to the trigger; Child → Escape returns to Submenu while the parent Dropdown stays open; a second Escape returns to the trigger. The published source-only harness/builder was rebuilt and its native Tab result checked again: https://github.com/nrps9909/nrps9909/tree/4fbcdb76051cdaa65cdfecb33a3f58e5a40d0ca8/evidence/dropdown-native-2026-10-24. The publication commit is GitHub-Verified; it contains no screenshots or private desktop data.
These remain local candidate/integration results, not an author update, upstream CI, merge/release, or screen-reader conformance. #273/#899/#275 heads were not changed by this verification.

Reviewed the latest head. The Escape-only capture listener addresses the focus-restoration ordering issue, while Tab retains bubbling and respects local stopPropagation(). Both listeners are removed with matching capture flags. The new teardown-order and locally handled Tab tests cover the previously reported regressions. No blocking findings.
Local validation at this head using an existing installed dependency tree: 6 suites / 34 tests / 1 snapshot, TypeScript, lint, and compile pass. Lint reports one existing unused-disable warning in docs/examples/simple.jsx. The latest GitHub checks currently include security/bot checks only; the older CI/Codecov results are for the previous head. No new native-browser or screen-reader validation was performed.

Non-blocking suggestion: please keep braces around both if bodies, consistent with the surrounding code. This preserves the Escape capture / Tab bubble behavior.
