> Fixes #5857 ## Changelog Entry - Fixed Copy confirmation visibility and status announcement retention, resolving [#5857](https://github.com//issues/5857) ## Description After activating Copy, Web Chat displayed `Copied` for only 700 ms and removed its polite live-region announcement after about 1 second. Windows Narrator could miss a queued polite announcement during that short window, while sighted users could also miss the visual confirmation. The visual `Copied` state now remains for 2 seconds, while a persistent atomic status remains available to assistive technology for 5 seconds. Separating these lifetimes avoids an unnecessarily long inline button state without shortening the window in which Narrator can process a queued polite announcement. ## Design The defect had two independent causes: 1. The visible confirmation ended after 700 ms. 2. The shared live-region queue removed the copy announcement after its configured 1-second timeout, allowing Narrator to miss it. A duration-only CSS change would not make the assistive-technology message more reliable. Increasing the shared live-region timeout would retain unrelated transcript announcements. Rendering the status inside the message row would also add `Copied` to an ancestor accessible name. Instead, the Copy button portals a persistent `role="status"` with `aria-atomic="true"` to the nearest `.webchat` root. Each activation replaces a keyed child, making repeated identical `Copied` messages observable while the status container remains mounted. Two independent ponyfill timers reset on every activation and clear on unmount: - A 2-second timer restores the visual Copy button state. - A 5-second timer removes the assistive-technology status content. The visual state is timer-controlled rather than dependent on CSS animation events, so it also cleans up when animation events are disabled, paused, or absent. Clipboard behavior, focus, localization, reduced-motion behavior, and the shared `LiveRegionTwin` implementation are unchanged. ## Specific Changes - Retained the visible `Copied` confirmation for 2 seconds. - Retained the independent atomic status announcement for 5 seconds. - Added a persistent status region outside response-labelled ancestors and the shared live region. - Added separate ponyfill timers with repeated-activation reset and unmount cleanup. - Removed CSS animation timing as a functional dependency. - Added HTML integration coverage for both lifetimes, status semantics and placement, repeated activation, cleanup, hide/show behavior, and Fluent light and dark themes. - Updated `CHANGELOG.md`. ### Reproduction on deployed Agent Builder
  1. Open Agent Builder Preview in Edge with Windows Narrator running.
  2. Generate a response and focus its Copy button.
  3. Activate Copy and listen while the visible button changes from Copy to Copied and rapidly back to Copy.
  4. Repeat after the visible state resets.

Observed on both foreground activations: Narrator started reading the changing button name, but the rapid reversion interrupted the confirmation and sounded like Copy Copy button. Agent Builder's accessibility tree exposed Copied as button content, with no separate status node. This reproduces the reported failure and matches the timing mechanism in the upstream Copy implementation.

Validation Validated the current head 6e65db8ff4b93f8553bf10f38b516824dc5cfc61 from an archive of the exact working tree. The review follow-up stores the stable portal target in a ref and drives the copied CSS class through React state without changing the two-second visual or five-second assistive-technology lifetimes. - npm clean-install --userconfig .npmrc && npm run build: passed in the isolated Linux environment. - npm run precommit:typecheck --workspace ./packages/component: passed. - ./node_modules/.bin/eslint --report-unused-disable-directives --max-warnings 0 packages/component/src packages/test/harness/src: passed. - Changed-file Prettier checks: passed. - git diff --check: passed. - Selenium Grid startup: passed with two Chrome nodes reported UP. - npm test -- --testPathPattern "__tests__/html2/accessibility/messageActions\\.html$": passed, 1 suite and 1 test, covering the related message-action accessibility change merged from main. - npm test -- --testPathPattern "__tests__/html2/copyButton/behavior\\.html$": passed, 1 suite, 1 test, and 3 snapshots. - npm test -- --testPathPattern "__tests__/html2/copyButton/behavior.hideAndShow\\.html$": passed, 1 suite, 1 test, and 3 snapshots. - npm test -- --testPathPattern "__tests__/html2/copyButton/layout\\.html$": passed, 1 suite, 1 test, and 1 snapshot. - Manual Windows Narrator validation previously passed for primary activation: Narrator announced the focused Copy button as Copied. The new change preserves the same 5-second atomic status lifetime. The shorter 2-second visual lifetime has not been manually rechecked with Narrator because it does not control the status announcement. - Rapid repeated activation and duplicate-speech behavior were not separately verified manually. - Selenium sessions, containers, networks, volumes, generated outputs, archives, and dependencies were removed after validation. ### Regression Coverage - behavior.html verifies the confirmation remains visible after 1 second, becomes hidden after 2 seconds, and retains the root-level atomic status until 5 seconds. It also verifies placement outside aria-labelledby ancestors and the shared live region, repeated activation, and independent cleanup. - behavior.hideAndShow.html verifies the visual confirmation remains visible after 1 second, returns to normal after 2 seconds, and stays normal after Web Chat is hidden and shown. - layout.html verifies Fluent-themed confirmation visibility after 1 second and cleanup after 2 seconds. - [x] I have added tests and executed them locally - [x] I have updated CHANGELOG.md - [ ] I have updated documentation No user-facing documentation change is required beyond the changelog. ## Review Checklist > This section is for contributors to review your work. - [x] Accessibility reviewed (tab order, content readability, alt text, color contrast) - [ ] Browser and platform compatibilities reviewed - [ ] CSS styles reviewed (minimal rules, no z-index) - [ ] Documents reviewed (docs, samples, live demo) - [ ] Internationalization reviewed (strings, unit formatting) - [ ] package.json and package-lock.json reviewed - [ ] Security reviewed (no data URIs, check for nonce leak) - [ ] Tests reviewed (coverage, legitimacy)

Review feedback disposition for d649dcbf

  • Addressed 1 valid, in-scope Copilot finding: Fluent Theme overrode the five-second Copy confirmation with a 500 ms duration.
  • Removed the Fluent-only duration override in Theme.module.css.
  • Added interaction coverage to both Fluent light and dark copy-button tests. Both pass after waiting one second, and the Fluent light test fails against the previous override with Expected: "visible", Received: "hidden".
  • Validation: isolated Linux full build passed; Fluent light passed (1 suite, 1 test, 1 snapshot); Fluent dark passed (1 suite, 1 test, 1 snapshot); Fluent-theme ESLint, Prettier, and git diff --check passed.
  • No feedback was rejected or deferred, and no ADO follow-up was required.
  • Threads resolved: 0. Threads intentionally left open: 1. GitHub rejected the inline reply and resolution because the app thread API is authenticated as an Enterprise Managed User that cannot access this public PR. No pending review was created.
  • The existing human approval remains aligned with the current implementation.

Review feedback disposition follow-up for d649dcbf

  • The Copilot thread has now been replied to inline and resolved: fix: retain copy confirmation for accessibility #5864 (comment)
  • The reply is submitted under a COMMENTED review, not pending. No unresolved review threads remain.
  • A fresh Copilot review request was attempted, but GitHub rejected it because the fork account lacks RequestReviewsByLogin permission on the upstream repository.
  • The previous human approval remains technically aligned with the implementation, but GitHub now reports REVIEW_REQUIRED because the fix added a new commit.

Duration follow-up completed in 44428fd2.

  • Addressed the valid UX concern by shortening the visible Copied state from 5 seconds to 2 seconds.
  • Preserved the accessibility mechanism by retaining the independent atomic role="status" content for 5 seconds.
  • Removed CSS animation events as a functional cleanup dependency and added separate resettable ponyfill timers.
  • Updated default, hide/show, and Fluent HTML integration coverage for the split lifetimes.
  • Passed isolated Linux full build, component typecheck, ESLint, Prettier, git diff --check, and all three focused Selenium HTML suites.

The existing human approval was against the main-merged head immediately before this focused duration commit. No review was dismissed or re-requested automatically. No ADO follow-up was needed because the concern was directly related and addressed in scope.

Preserve both accessibility changelog entries while integrating the latest main branch.

Merge conflict resolved in ee56e47e.

No review feedback was rejected or deferred, no ADO follow-up was needed, and no reviews were dismissed or re-requested. GitHub now reports the PR as mergeable; required checks are running on the new head.

Note on failing checks: both failures appear unrelated to my changes.

  • HTML test 8/17: richCard/inputCard.withStyleOptions.html had a screenshot mismatch of 15.82%. The PR does not modify Rich Cards, Adaptive Cards, or those style options. The test does not activate Copy.

  • HTML test 16/17: sendBox/hideKeyboard.pauseBetweenSetAttributeAndFocus.html intermittently missed the asynchronous focus() callback after requestIdleCallback(). The PR does not modify the send box, keyboard handling, focus logic, or idle callbacks.

The Copy confirmation tests and the related message-actions accessibility test passed against the merged head. Based on the files, execution paths, and failure details, these are independent snapshot/timing flakes rather than regressions caused by #5864.

The failing checks are infrastructure failures, not failures in the code.

  • HTML test (14/17) failed before running any tests because GitHub Actions could not download the required docker artifact: Artifact not found for name: docker.

  • Merge test results failed as a consequence because shard 14 produced no test-result-* artifact. It also reported lcov: command not found.

  • The other 16 HTML shards passed, along with build, static analysis, unit tests, type definitions, browser builds, and samples.

Aside from possibly adjusting how the "copied" text is surfaced to the user, this also leaks the element into state and complicates the layout via introducing portalling which could further affect accessibility beyond the fix.

🔵 Needs a closer look

Repeated activations and potential duplicate announcements still need Windows Narrator validation.

Review follow-up implemented and validated in 6e65db8f.

  • Classified both Compulim findings as valid and in scope.
  • Replaced portal-target state with a stable useRef assigned before the Copy button is enabled.
  • Replaced direct classList mutation with React state and conditional class composition.
  • Preserved repeated activation and the independent 2-second visual and 5-second status timers.
  • Passed isolated Linux full build, component typecheck, ESLint, Prettier, git diff --check, and the three focused Copy Selenium suites with snapshots.

Compulim thread follow-up completed for current head 6e65db8f using the explicitly authenticated ahonamatata account.

  • Posted submitted replies under both original inline comments.
  • Resolved both review threads.
  • Verified both reply reviews are COMMENTED, not PENDING.
  • Confirmed no pending review was created.

GitHub did not permit ahonamatata to dismiss Compulim’s stale CHANGES_REQUESTED review: REST returned 404 and GraphQL explicitly returned FORBIDDEN for DismissPullRequestReview. Both REST review-request attempts also returned 404, so a fresh Compulim review request could not be created with this account. The stale review remains on commit ee56e47e; OEvgeny’s separate unresolved changes request was not modified.

Render the persistent atomic status beside the copy button instead of portalling it to the Web Chat root. Verify timing, repeated activation, DOM placement, and accessibility-tree isolation.

Addressed this concern in 91fc707f.

The portal and DOM target ref are removed. The persistent, atomic role="status" is now rendered as a visually hidden sibling of the Copy button inside the existing activity-actions container. This keeps the status mounted before activation without reparenting DOM, and its absolute positioning keeps it out of flex layout. This local placement is now safe because #5865 removed the message-row aria-labelledby relationship that originally motivated the root portal.

The browser regression test now verifies that the status:

  • is mounted and empty before activation;
  • remains outside the Copy button and the shared transcript live region;
  • has no aria-labelledby ancestor and is not portalled to the Web Chat root;
  • remains a distinct Chrome accessibility-tree status node;
  • does not give the action container or message group an accessible name;
  • replaces its keyed child on repeated Copy activation;
  • remains populated for 5 seconds while the visual confirmation is visible at 1 second and clears after 2 seconds.

Validation against the pushed change:

  • isolated Linux full build: passed;
  • component TypeScript, ESLint, and Prettier checks: passed;
  • copyButton/behavior.html: passed, 3 snapshots;
  • copyButton/behavior.hideAndShow.html: passed, 3 snapshots;
  • copyButton/layout.html: passed, 1 snapshot;
  • accessibility/messageActions.html: passed.

This provides live DOM, timing, repeated-activation, layout, and accessibility-tree evidence that removing the portal does not broaden accessible names or alter layout. Automated browser checks cannot prove Narrator speech output, so a final Edge/Narrator spot check remains the manual verification boundary.
