Description

Clerk stamps every session token with a cat protected-header category, but other JWT classes signed by the same instance key, such as the OIDC id_token issued to an OAuth application, carry no category at all. The session-token paths only rejected JWTs tagged with a different category, so a validly signed token with no category was accepted as a session for the user in sub.

authenticateRequest() now returns a signed-out state with reason token-type-mismatch for a JWT with no cat in the Authorization header or the __session cookie, matching the existing handling of machine and JWT-template tokens on those paths. verifyToken() returns a token-invalid error for such a token before resolving a signing key. JWT-template tokens remain verifiable through verifyToken() for direct callers, and the ignore category is still accepted everywhere a session token is.

The handshake verifier is unchanged: it continues to reject a present non-session category and to tolerate an absent one.

Self-signed test tokens must now include cat: 'cl_B7d4PD111AAA' in their header to be accepted as session tokens; the shared fixtures in @clerk/backend have been re-signed accordingly.

Clerk stamps every session token with a `cat` header, but OIDC id_tokens
minted for third-party OAuth clients carry none while being signed by
the same instance key. authenticateRequest() and verifyToken() now treat
a missing category as non-session, so an id_token can no longer replay
as a session for the user in `sub`.

The handshake verifier keeps tolerating an absent category because the
edge session-minter signs handshake tokens without one.

📝 Walkthrough

JWTs without a cat header are classified as non-session tokens. Request authentication rejects them as session tokens, and verifyToken() rejects non-session categories except JWT-template. Handshake verification continues to tolerate a missing category. Tests, JWT fixtures, integration helpers, and the changeset reflect these category rules.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5e607

A category-less session cookie can trigger a handshake instead of the expected token-type error when client-UAT is absent. The token is not authenticated, so the risk is bounded, but the edge case should be fixed before relying on the new rejection behavior.

JWTs without a `cat` header are no longer accepted as session tokens: `authenticateRequest()` returns signed out (`token-type-mismatch`) and `verifyToken()` returns `token-invalid`. This includes OIDC `id_token`s issued by Clerk. Tests that sign their own session tokens must add `cat: 'cl_B7d4PD111AAA'` to the header.

🟡 Minor · Validate the cookie category before the no-client-UAT handshake shortcut. · request.ts:630-659

packages/backend/src/tokens/request.ts:630-659
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Validate the cookie category before the no-client-UAT handshake shortcut.

When __session contains a decodable JWT without cat and clientUat is absent, the early presence-only branch returns SessionTokenWithoutClientUAT before hasNonSessionJwtCategory runs. An eligible request enters the unauthenticated handshake flow instead of returning the required signed-out TokenTypeMismatch state. Move the existing category guard before this branch. A session-category cookie still passes the guard and preserves legitimate handshake requests.

@coderabbitai Re: moving the category guard before the no-client-UAT handshake shortcut: intentional. The no-client_uat branch only triggers a handshake, and FAPI decides the outcome without ever trusting the cookie. Machine and wrong-category tokens already follow this ordering since #9168, and the handshake replaces the bad cookie rather than leaving it in place.

@dominic-clerk Thanks for clarifying. The no-client_uat branch triggers a handshake; it does not accept the cookie as a session token. FAPI determines the outcome, and the handshake replaces the bad cookie. The category guard does not need to move before that branch. I withdraw the finding.

Learning: In clerk/javascript, the session-cookie authentication flow in packages/backend/src/tokens/request.ts intentionally places the no-`client_uat` handshake shortcut before the token-category guard. That branch only triggers a handshake and does not trust the cookie. FAPI determines the authentication outcome, and the handshake replaces the bad cookie. Machine and wrong-category tokens have followed this ordering since PR #9168. Do not recommend moving the category guard ahead of this shortcut solely because an invalid-category cookie can trigger a handshake.
