feat(router-plugin): add native Bun bundler integration - #8804
Adds @tanstack/router-plugin/bun for React Router builds with Bun.build(). It reuses the existing route generator and reference/split/shared-module compiler. Generation is awaited before loading; each build has its own compiler state. No separate route generator, code splitter, package resolver, or watcher is introduced.
Native development uses Bun's preparation callbacks and load dependencies to regenerate on route add, rename, and delete. Generator.getWatchDependencies() supplies discovered configuration files, imported helpers, and physical route directories. Configuration evaluation uses a fresh per-generation Jiti cache. HMR templates use direct import.meta.hot.data / .accept access, which Bun requires; their existing state-preservation behavior is retained.
This PR is ready for review. Production builds work with released Bun 1.4.3; complete authored source maps and development require unreleased dependency changes. The new export and generator API need maintainer sign-off under CONTRIBUTING.md. TanStack Start, SSR, server functions, and Nitro are outside this PR. Related discussion: #8781.
Dependency fixes are kept upstream, not vendored into Router:
unplugin #625 forwards transform maps; Jiti #479 refreshes imported JS/MJS/JSON helpers when module caching is disabled.
Current review fixes: an invalid first virtual configuration now recovers when its file changes, including relative/absolute paths and syntax/schema failures. All four new public-API regressions fail before the fix and pass afterward. The dependency getter also includes the configured file after a failed first run, without duplicating it after recovery. The production browser fixture uses Bun's allocated port and the existing appServerReady helper; all seven cases pass while the old fixed port is deliberately occupied.
Node 26.12.1 / pnpm 11.21.0: generator 281 runtime tests and 12 type fixtures pass; plugin 901 pass with 3 existing expected failures. TypeScript 5.6–7.0, ESLint, formatting, builds and package/export checks pass.
The updated combined native Windows x64 stack passes 7 production, 16 development, 9 generator-helper and 9 live-browser helper cases without skips. It uses the current unplugin/Jiti PR distributions and the Bun preparation-cleanup follow-up. Authored source positions are checked before and after HMR.
Released Bun 1.4.3 CI on this Router commit passes on Ubuntu, Windows and macOS: 6 production cases and 1 explicit native input-map capability skip per platform. This is separate from patched development coverage.
Jiti CI passes all six Ubuntu/Windows Node 20/22/24 jobs. unplugin CI passes all ten jobs, including Bun on Ubuntu/Windows/macOS. Upstream Bun Buildkite approval is still outstanding.
Before these review follow-ups, the complete combined native stack passed the same 7/14/9/9 Router cases on Windows x64, Linux x64 and macOS ARM64. Native regression suites passed Linux 121, Windows 114 (1 existing skip, 6 todos) and macOS 118 (3 existing todos), plus Chrome ordering and external input-map cases. macOS combined run, native build provenance. That macOS native binary predates the preparation-cleanup follow-up.
Existing Vite browser coverage (206 cases), Rsbuild coverage (3 cases) and all 18 bundle-size scenarios were validated before these review follow-ups. The reference/split/shared transforms are unchanged by the follow-ups. Recorded raw/gzip/Brotli/initial-size metrics and file inventories matched original-main sources in the same checkout path; no build-time or Bun-versus-Vite performance advantage is claimed.
Temporary native-build infrastructure is excluded from the PR. Complete development and authored source maps still require the linked unreleased dependencies. Windows ancestor-directory renames with open descendant watch handles retain the OS-level EPERM limitation also reproduced with Node and released Bun; watched-leaf rename/recreation and route add/delete are covered.
An initially invalid external virtual configuration needs a new request/browser reload after correction. Both syntax and schema cases now have browser regressions proving recovery in the same Bun process. An isolated before/after probe confirms that the getter fix alone cannot provide automatic recovery here: rejected onStart prevents the generated-tree onLoad from registering its watch dependencies. Automatic recovery before the first successful load needs earlier native Bun watch registration; no Router-side watcher or error-swallowing workaround is added.
Implementation and validation were AI-assisted. API approval and dependency integration remain required.

Walkthrough
This pull request adds a Bun adapter for the router plugin, Bun-specific route generation, code splitting, and HMR hooks. It also adds generator watch dependencies for virtual route configuration and Bun build and development-server end-to-end coverage.
Route discovery collects virtual configuration and imported helper paths. Generator.getWatchDependencies() returns tracked files and directories. Tests cover dependency lists, configuration edits, helper imports, and regeneration.
Bun plugin and build hooks packages/router-plugin/src/bun.ts, packages/router-plugin/src/core/*, packages/router-plugin/package.json, packages/router-plugin/tests/*, packages/router-plugin/tsconfig.json, packages/router-plugin/vite.config.ts
The package exports a Bun plugin. Bun-specific hooks generate and load route trees, watch generator dependencies, load split and shared route modules, and configure HMR. Type tests and HMR snapshots cover the API and generated output.
Bun production build coverage e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/build.mjs, e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/bun.spec.ts, e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/fixture/*, e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/package.json, e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/playwright.config.ts, e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/source-maps.mjs, .github/workflows/bun.yml, .changeset/fruity-pears-see.md
Build tests cover plugin reuse, concurrent builds, route changes and recovery, aliases, code splitting, shared-module identity, and source maps. The workflow runs the Bun end-to-end target across three operating systems. The changeset marks the plugin and generator for minor releases.
Bun development-server coverage e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/dev-fixture.ts, e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/dev.test.ts, e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/dev-playwright.config.ts, e2e/react-router/bun-basic-file-based/run-dev.mjs
Development tests cover route discovery and edits, aliases, HMR, source maps, error recovery, and virtual configuration changes. The fixture and runner manage the Bun process and temporary project files.
TanStack/router#8541: Changes route-export preservation and re-export binding handling in the code-splitting compiler used by this Bun integration.

Explanation
The title "feat(router-plugin): add native Bun bundler integration" matches the main change. The PR adds a new @tanstack/router-plugin/bun entry (packages/router-plugin/src/bun.ts, package.json exports) that wraps the router plugin for Bun.build(). The supporting changes are generator watch dependencies, per-generation Jiti cache, HMR template changes for Bun, and the Bun e2e fixtures. The title names the primary change and is concise and specific.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has the Changes section, the three checklist items, and the Release Impact section. The Changes section explains the new @tanstack/router-plugin/bun export, the reuse of the existing generator and compiler, watch dependencies, per-generation Jiti cache, and HMR template changes. It discloses AI authorship and reports validation on several platforms. The description is long and detailed, with many upstream links and validation counts. Some items are only partly covered: the Start and Nitro scope is stated, but the description does not say which packages change beyond the router-plugin and router-generator changesets. Overall it is largely complete and specific, so it passes.

This makes each generation evaluate the current configuration and collect its imported dependency graph for watching. Otherwise a helper edit can either go unnoticed or return cached exports during regeneration. The cache is local to one generation. Testing also exposed Jiti caching JS/MJS/JSON despite moduleCache: false and tryNative: false; that dependency fix is kept upstream in Jiti #479

Bun requires direct import.meta.hot.data access. Aliasing import.meta.hot produces import.meta.hot.data cannot be used indirectly. I reproduced this in a native browser test. This change removes the alias while preserving the existing HMR cache behavior

This generated HMR code is also used by the Bun integration. Bun requires direct access to both import.meta.hot.data and import.meta.hot.accept; the alias produces runtime errors. The change only removes that indirection. The existing route-update and fallback behavior is retained; the Vite and Rsbuild browser suites pass
Thanks for the review! I'm working through your feedback, including moving the E2E tests to the root directory. I'm also running the remaining native Windows/macOS and HMR tests. Once those are validated, I'll reply to each question with the reasoning and test results. I'll keep the PR as a draft in the meantime :)
After working through the implementation and upstream blockers with Codex (he's a tough guy xD we had some pretty long discussions before finally figuring out a solid plan hahaha), I now have a native Bun integration that reuses Router’s existing generator and splitting compiler. The combined patch stack has passed native validation on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
I’m excited about the result. Getting this into a released state still depends on upstream fixes, so I’d appreciate your feedback and, where possible, help coordinating review with the Bun maintainers.
Regarding watchChange: I haven’t added support for that hook. The integration uses Bun’s native plugin callbacks: awaited onStart preparation and onLoad dependencies through watchFiles/watchDirs. The generator exposes the discovered configuration dependencies and route directories. Bun’s dev server then invalidates the generated module when those inputs change. There is no separate Router watcher or replacement route generator/code splitter.
The missing dev-server lifecycle support is addressed in Bun #46706. This also fixes dropped watcher batches while the server thread is busy.
The source-map problem turned out to involve several layers:
unplugin #625 forwards the maps returned by the existing Router transforms.
Bun #46727 fixes external input-map reads returning EINVAL on Windows.
Browser testing also exposed HMR module identity/update-order and cached dependency delivery problems, addressed in #46704 and #46705. The combined build additionally includes the existing cycle-initialization and atomic-save patches from #40259 and #39571.
Imported virtual configuration helpers exposed a separate cache issue in Jiti. Jiti #479 fixes fresh evaluation of JS/MJS/CJS/JSON helpers with moduleCache: false and tryNative: false.
With that combined patch stack, native Windows x64, Linux x64 and macOS ARM64 each pass 7 production browser tests, 14 development browser tests, 9 generator helper cases and 9 live-browser helper cases without skips. This includes authored source-map positions before/after HMR and route add/rename/delete without restarting the server. One known Windows limitation remains: renaming an ancestor directory with open descendant watch handles can return EPERM.
The complete macOS validation and released-Bun production CI on Ubuntu/Windows/macOS are available. The released-Bun CI passes six production tests with one explicit input-map capability skip per platform. Released Bun still lacks the full development/source-map capabilities; those results are kept separate from the combined-stack validation.
The Router implementation is in #8804. The Router and Bun PRs remain drafts; unplugin and Jiti are now ready for review. Upstream CI, API sign-off and dependency integration are still outstanding. This work covers React + TanStack Router; TanStack Start and SSR are outside its scope.
Please take your time looking through it. I’m happy to explain any part of the implementation or test results and work through questions or requested changes. I believe this gives us a solid, tested path to native Bun builds and development for Router, and I’d like to work with you to get the remaining upstream pieces reviewed and turn it into something we can ship :)

Include the configured virtual route file in watchFiles.
When a string virtualRouteConfig fails during the initial Bun onStart, configFilePaths remains empty. Bun awaits onStart before loading modules, so the rejected preparation does not reach the generated-tree onLoad callback that returns watchFiles. Editing the configuration file cannot trigger a retry through Bun’s native watch path. The developer must restart Bun or regenerate manually.
