Summary

New slide 20, "CE inputs PolicyEngine can use and TAXSIM cannot", after the input slide. It is a table with one row for each input area:

Area CE variables PolicyEngine input TAXSIM
Medical costs and premiums HEALTHCQ, HLTHINCQ other_medical_expenses, health_insurance_premiums Only the deductible amount, in one total
Charitable gifts CASHCOCQ charitable_cash_donations In one total with mortgage interest
Tuition EDUCACQ qualified_tuition_expenses No field
College enrollment IN_COLL is_full_time_college_student No field
Car loan interest VEHFINCQ auto_loan_interest No field
Rent and utilities RENDWECQ, UTILCQ rent, gas_expense, water_expense Rent for state credits only; no utilities
Benefits received JFS_AMT, SSIX, WELFAREX ssi_reported, takes_up_snap_if_eligible One transfers total
  • CE variables: all are current Interview variables in the 2024 PUMD dictionary. IN_COLL and SSIX are on MEMI; the others are on FMLI.
  • PolicyEngine variables: all names were checked in the PolicyEngine US source.
  • Speaker notes:
    • CASHCOCQ also includes alimony, child support and gifts, and EDUCACQ includes K-12 tuition.
    • The CQ and PQ variables are quarterly.
    • The car loan deduction needs final assembly in the United States, which the CE does not record.
    • CE tax estimates from TAXSIM ran from Q2 2013 through the 2023 data. The 2024 data has none.
  • Docs: the speaker notes and README are renumbered (29 slides, 58 minutes plus Q&A). README slide references that had drifted in earlier PRs are corrected.

Checks

  • The slide fits at 1024×768, 1280×720, 1366×768, 1440×900 and 1920×1080.
  • bunx eslint slideshows/bls-taxsim-2026, 126 vitest tests and bun run build pass locally.

New slide 20 after the input slide: seven areas where the CE Interview
survey collects an input that PolicyEngine can use but TAXSIM's format
cannot carry - medical costs and premiums, charitable gifts, tuition,
college enrollment, car loan interest, rent and utilities, and benefits
received. Each row lists the CE variables (checked in the 2024 Interview
PUMD dictionary), the PolicyEngine input variables (checked in the
PolicyEngine US source), what PolicyEngine does with them and TAXSIM's
limit. The notes add caveats (CASHCOCQ and EDUCACQ composition,
quarterly vs annual periods) and that CE tax estimates ended with the
2023 data.

Notes and README renumbered (29 slides, 58 minutes plus Q&A); README
slide references that had drifted are corrected.
