Tracks #266 and #267; this PR closes them only after a complete, passing matched evaluation.

Root cause: the harness rejected its own interrupted-run checkpoint because resume validation looked for the prior budget hold at the report’s top level, while the report stores it under budget. A transport interruption therefore prevented the cohort from resuming safely.

Approach: run the frozen 30-fixture × 3-repeat cohort against immutable V2 v2.0.8 and one exact V3 candidate. Both arms use the candidate worker, identical Responses request normalization, isolated workspaces, independent effect verification, and worst-case reservation before every provider request. Unknown usage remains held. The runner requires an explicit --prior-hold-usd for every campaign, pins it to the report/checkpoint, and reports reserved or unknown calls from the relay journal. Resume validation now reads and verifies the saved hold from the nested budget object.

Validation: the new nested-checkpoint regression failed before the fix and passes after it; all 30 matched-harness tests pass. make check, make lint, and make docs-check pass. A local full make test ran 1,096 tests with 2 skips but errored in the two browser tests (test_web_auth and test_web_sessions) because Playwright Sync API was invoked inside an asyncio loop; the other tests passed. Updated-head CI run 40063542291 passed all selected checks, including full Python 3.13, wheel/install-update, Docker, and core checks.

The first live attempt using gemini-3.5-flash-lite reached 133/180 arm rows before upstream_response_failed:AI_RELAY_UPSTREAM_ERROR; its ledger records 2,207 calls, 11 unknown-usage reservations, 128/133 rows with complete usage, and US$9.484181966 remaining under the US$20 cumulative cap. A first attempted switch to gemini-3.1-flash-lite was mislabeled: the report label changed, but the relay module retained gemini-3.5-flash-lite; its ledger proves all 10 requests used 3.5, so it is excluded as 3.1 evidence and its full spend/reservation remains in the cumulative budget. With both module constants corrected, a fresh gemini-3.1-flash-lite run reached 1/180 arm rows and stopped on AI_RELAY_STREAM_INCOMPLETE; its one request has unknown usage and remains reserved. Across the attempts the ledger leaves US$9.479550030 under the US$20 cap. Neither model run provides a paired comparison or statistical gate, and results are not pooled across model cohorts.

Risks and follow-up: #266/#267 remain open pending a complete matched cohort, all safety gates, outcome improvement, and lower token/request costs. Unknown provider usage remains reserved. This PR stays draft until those requirements pass.

Walkthrough

This pull request adds a matched V2/V3 evaluation harness with a fixed fixture cohort, worker measurements, budget accounting, a Responses relay, and resumable reporting. It also changes executing-plan task preservation and synchronizes CLI spinner display across concurrent calls.

Changes: V3 matched evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fixture catalog and validation
benchmarks/v3_fixtures.py, tests/test_v3_fixtures.py
Defines 30 fixtures across ten categories, adds plan-task seeds and verifiers, and validates cohort size, category counts, and required plan scenarios.
Worker configuration and measurements
benchmarks/prompt_worker.py
Selects the provider and model, accepts optional plan input, and records runtime events, receipts, process activity, plan state, and timing in the result.
Pricing, budget ledger, and matched summaries
benchmarks/v3_matched.py, tests/test_v3_matched_benchmark.py
Adds RMB pricing, persistent budget reservations and settlements, and paired-result summaries with completeness and comparison checks.
Authenticated Responses relay
benchmarks/v3_responses_relay.py, tests/test_v3_responses_relay.py, tests/test_delegation.py
Adds authenticated request forwarding, budget reservation and settlement, stream handling, and upstream-error fail-stop behavior. The tests also cover provider access through the relay and accepted Anthropic credential headers.
Matched execution, verification, and reporting
benchmarks/v3_matched_live.py, tests/test_v3_matched_live.py, docs/index.md, docs/v3-evaluation.md
Runs both arms in isolated workspaces, verifies fixture outcomes, checkpoints and reconciles reports, and documents the cohort and run requirements.

Executing plan resumption

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preserve executing plan tasks
openkyrozen/agent/loop.py, tests/test_interaction.py
When an executing plan has no mode override, the chat turn does not clear its tasks. A test checks that task IDs remain unchanged.

Spinner synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Synchronize concurrent spinner display
openkyrozen/app/state.py, openkyrozen/interfaces/cli/rendering.py, tests/test_delegation.py
Uses a shared nonblocking lock to guard spinner display and tests concurrent LLM calls.

  • Issue 267: The V3 evaluation adds replanning, task-change, scope-preservation, material-revision, and plan-churn scenarios that exercise the evaluation objectives described in the issue. The live evaluation remains unverified.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to f8268

Two defects in the live evaluation runner can waste the ¥49 budget. A complete matched run would crash while writing its final report, and a host without a working OS sandbox would spend budget on rows that all fail verification. Fix both before running the live evaluation.
