Proposal to disable government affiliated accounts from turning off their comments or blocking accounts #69

Description

@mgx96

We're proposing this change because X currently serves as our primary digital town square, and allowing government-affiliated accounts to block users or disable their comments fundamentally undermines democratic transparency. When a state actor turns off replies, they effectively transform a two-way public forum into a one-way, state-sponsored broadcast channel. I believe citizens must be able to publicly question, debate, and provide feedback in the exact venue where public policy is being announced and discussed.

Beyond just the platform's ethos, there is a real democratic and legal precedent here. In many jurisdictions, official government social media accounts are legally recognized as public forums. Giving public officials the platform tools to block citizens restricts their basic right to access official information and petition their government. Furthermore, allowing officials to curate their comment sections by blocking dissenters creates a totally fabricated consensus. It artificially shields state actors from legitimate criticism and severely skews public perception of how people actually feel about a policy.
