gender question should allow multiple responses, or offer mutually-partitioned options #17

Description

@tayloraswift

i feel it should be self-explanatory, but this is an extremely poor way to ask this question.

it would be better to simply remove the “female to male” and “male to female” options, or, if collecting information on birth sex is motivating, to redesign the question to offer the following options:

  1. Cisgender Female
  2. Transgender Female
  3. Cisgender Male
  4. Transgender Male
  5. Nonbinary, agender, bigender, or other not listed
  6. Decline to answer

legacy data should be migrated such that individuals who responded either Female or Male to female are counted as if they had selected both options. this will probably inflate the Male to female total, but then again, it’s extremely unlikely that category was ever providing an accurate population count in the first place, as very few trans women would have selected that option instead of just Female.

based on discussion on twitter/x, the same appears to be true for trans men, the overwheming majority of whom simply select Male.
