v0.19 design goals

This is a tracking issue with design goals for v0.19:

• Migrate to Rust 2024
• Work out extension traits (Proposal to expose backend-specific functionality #1334)
  • RAW mode on WASAPI (WASAPI: Raw stream mode #1173)
  • NO_CONVERT mode on PipeWire
  • Control panel on ASIO (ASIO: open control panel #1074)
  • Set identifying stream properties on PipeWire (Pipewire: API to set identifying properties #1186)
  • Exclusive mode on CoreAudio, PipeWire & WASAPI (Support Exclusive Mode #106)
  • Force / passthrough mode on PipeWire
• Normalize stream lifecycle: play/pause → start/pause/stop with draining stop (feat: rename StreamTrait::play to start, add draining stop #1258)
• Software pause on ALSA (feat: rename StreamTrait::play to start, add draining stop #1258)
• Input streams on WASM (Add support for input streams to webaudio host #412, What would it take to make WebAssembly audio inputs happen? #813, In Wasm, Only Output Can be Used ? #868, feat: add input streams to WebAudio and AudioWorklet #1308 )
• Refactor SupportedConfig types (SupportedStreamConfig(Range) API inconsistencies - can we have a SupportedStreamConfig.try_with_fixed_buffer_size? #956)
  • Consider merging various types (How to handle zero channels in SupportedStreamConfig? #676)
  • Consider distinguishing discrete & continuous sample rates
  • Consider searching (SupportedConfig searcher #1304)
• Refactor BufferSize with range support (Consider adding a BufferSize::Near variant (alternative to Default and Fixed) #447, Reviewing and deciding upon a default buffer size strategy for ALSA #446, [WASAPI] Using fixed buffer size when the only available output config shows 'Unknown' buffer size ? #534)
• Device across thread boundaries (Send + Sync) (Provide the tools to pass devices (and the rest) around across Send/Sync boundaries #435)
• Duplex stream API (Duplex Stream Support #349, Plan for implementing an ALSA duplex API #628, feat: add duplex stream API (interface only; backends to follow) #1229, feat: duplex support for pipewire #1272, feat(alsa): duplex stream support #1347)

Target date: when it's done; feature set may change at any time.

so far:

• Bug: ASIO modified feedback example no mic input #1287 / fix(asio): share duplex buffer state across Device handles for the same driver #1297: static review posted (ASIO duplex shared AsioStreams). no ASIO hardware here yet for a live A/B.
• feat(WASAPI): allow setting raw stream mode #1195 (WASAPI RAW / WASAPI: Raw stream mode #1173): reviewed. cargo check green on windows. flagged that the PR adds AudioProcessing on StreamConfig while this tracker buckets RAW under extension traits. would love a maintainer call on StreamConfig vs WasapiDeviceExt before that lands.
• HostId enum Refactor #1274 (HostId refactor / HostId enum Refactor #1260): light review posted (supported vs available iterator filter + deprecation/UPGRADING notes).

next windows-shaped thing i can take unless you prefer otherwise: help land whatever API shape you want for #1173, or keep grooming the PR backlog.

What exactly is meant by ‘Native DSD on WASAPI’, I thought there was no standard way of showing dsd on waveformatextensible, unless one of the non-pcm values has been standardised, and also wouldn’t it be DoP effectively? Aka what would need to be done for this to be ticked off, in detail

You are right, Linux and ASIO only. I’ll remove it.
