Run flake8 (and black) on the code?

If you run flake8 on your code, you will see many suggested small improvements and maybe some errors (due to indentation).

And if you feel like it, reformatting with black (or ruff) would make things a lot more standard.

We've tried automated format checks in other projects and there are some cases where I butt heads with its mandated code style, such as having too many local variables. Will leave this open as a "let's look into it" issue.
